Depression - Symptoms and Islamic ways for dealing with depression

If most of the time you feel sadness, sorrow, unhappiness. Self-despair, self-pity and worthlessness, then you may be suffering from depression. Being in a bad mood for a week or month is not depression. Rather, depression is an unbearable condition that can limit your pleasure. If your bad mood is stealing your happiness on daily basis, then most probably you are dealing with depression. Antidepressants are not good way to deal with depression. No matter how hard your situation is, this article is going to help you get back to track. With your strong will, nothing is impossible. If you refuse to surrender, neither anybody nor any situation can make you feel worthless or disappointed.

It might be difficult in start to practice and implement these techniques, but with diligence effort nothing is impossible.

 

Beautify your thinking- think about paradise

It is common to do nothing except thinking, while dealing with depression. Although a common suggestion for depressed people is to do different activities or adopt new hobbies. But they claim that it is difficult to do anything in sad mood. It is difficult to get up and do something constructive and for this you need to push yourself really hard. As in depression, people always prefer to think only. So, instead of pushing yourself you need a pulling force which comes through this technique. It is mentioned in Quran that Allah has selected few people on basis of their thinking about paradise. So, whenever you feel surrounded by tensions, start thinking about your personal beautiful home in paradise. Make a clear image in your mind. It is difficult for some people to think clearly. But try your best. Observe your thoughts clearly. Tell yourself that there will be a time when you will be in paradise in sha Allah. Then you will be independent and free with plenty of resources and endless happiness. This thinking will calm you down. Then think about your personal space in paradise and add details to your mental image. For example, what kind of room you want and what should be in it. How it should be decorated and what kind of resources you need to have there. Think about every little aspect and this will clarify you what you actually want to have in your life. Additionally it will motivate you to struggle more for getting best in this life and life after death. By doing this exercise, you will be using law of attraction and the effect of positive thinking will soon be integrated in your subconscious mind. Eventually it will result in better circumstances as you will notice that when you will be focusing more on what you want instead of what you don’t want. It will help you focus and become solution oriented.

Note: If you have any guilt and you regret about your sins then always remember that if you ask forgiveness from Allah, Allah is best forgiver, and Allah loves to forgive and Allah love those who forgive. If you will forgive then do believe that Allah will forgive you in sha Allah.

 

Make strong relationship with Allah

Keep asking Allah whatever you want to have in this life and life after death. We must follow our Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in this regard.

One should always pray for both lives as Our Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) taught this dua:

Our Lord! Give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surah Al-Baqarah: verse 201)

Don’t forget to ask Allah on daily basis, make a habit to ask Allah whatever you want as soon as a wish appears in your heart.

Even if you need salt, ask Allah for it. And if you need something which seems impossible to you still ask Allah. Always remember that nothing is impossible for Allah and Allah is the ultimate giver. Allah loves those who ask from him alone.

Send gift to your prophet on Daily or weekly basis

Send blessings to our Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) on daily basis through darood shareef. Allah said in Quran:


"Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet [Muhammad (P.B.U.H)] O you who believe! Call for (Heavenly) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation."[ 33. Surah Al-Ahzab : Ayah 56]

Think of angels – Inspire them

Always remember that you are never alone. Allah is always there watching you and His angels are there to write down all of your actions, even if you take a step or blink you eye, they count it and they keep record of it. So do good deeds and imagine that angels are recording your video and they are reporting Allah whatever you are doing. Even if you are alone, do inspiring work.

Zikr – be a mufaridoon (Winner)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The Mufarridun have gone ahead." He was asked, "Who are the Mufarridun?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Those men and women who frequently celebrate the remembrance of Allah."

So keep a tasbeeh or counter and make it a habit to learn and read praise and glory duas or names of Allah. Additionally, do astagfar on daily basis.

 

Emotion comes from motion

Don’t sit as an idol. As an idol’s mind is devils workshop. Do exercise and keep yourself physically fit. Join a gym or do it at home on daily basis.

 

Help others

Did you ever wonder from where feeling of self-worth comes from? It always comes from providing value to somebody. The more value you provide to other, the more worthy you feel. It doesn’t mean that you need a lot of money to buy special gifts for others. You can simply start with a smile, which can make other feel good. You can motivate someone for anything. Believe me, the words you will use to motivate someone else equally helps you to get motivated.
